20 of the BEST Christmas Movies

20 of the Best Christmas Movies

A couple of years ago, I took part in something called Blogmas, where I (failed miserably) at posting every day in December. One of those posts was on my favourite Christmas movies, so I’m upcycling some content today as I revamp that old post and bring it to you in all of its new glory!

For me, movies are heavily associated with Christmas. When you have time off from school or work, not only do you get to watch the reruns that are scheduled on daytime TV every single year – Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (the original, the remake is sacrilege), Mary Poppins, It’s A Wonderful Life, etc. –  but you also get to stay up late eating gluttonous food with your family, while watching movies into the wee hours of the morning, because you have no alarm to rudely awaken you the next day (I tend to do a Harry Potter marathon every year).

Whether these are strictly Christmas-themed movies, or movies I just associate with Christmas, may I present the BEST Christmas movies for you to check out:

1. The Santa Clause

This movie came out when I was 4, and I’m pretty sure I’ve watched it on Christmas Eve every single year since. This is a very special movie for me, and my ULTIMATE Christmas film.

2. Muppet’s Christmas Carol

3. The Grinch

4. Scrooged

A firm family favourite we watch every year.

5. Home Alone

No matter how many times you see this movie, you will still laugh until your stomach hurts and your eyes are streaming during the finale.

6. Miracle on 34th Street

7. The Nightmare Before Christmas

8. Jingle All The Way

9. Bridget Jones’ Diary

Now we’re verging into the slightly more “normal” movies, but still ones I associate with Christmas. Who will ever forget Bridget running through a snowy London in her big knickers while Someone Like You by Van Morrison plays in the background?

10. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

This is on TV every Christmas, and it’s the only time I watch it. But I always do, every year.

11. Mary Poppins

Another classic shown every year that is a must see!

12. Barefoot In The Park

A classic that’s possibly just a festive favourite of mine, but this movie made me fall in love with Robert Redford.

13. Singin’ In The Rain

14. Dirty Dancing

And now for some relatively modern movies, that just mean something to me, are my family’s classics, and are ones that usually get a dusting off around Christmas time!

15. BIG

16. The Great Outdoors

17. Pretty Woman

18. Harry Potter

The soundtrack literally means Christmas to me now. *Ahem* This also represents all 8 movies.

19. Beverly Hills Cop

Now we’re on to two movies that are very significant for my family, but that I associate with Christmas because it’s when we all get together to watch them. Again, this represents the Beverly Hills Cop series.

20. The Quiet Man

This is my dad’s favourite movie of all time, and subsequently as a family we were brought up watching it. We can all quote the entire movie, we holiday’d where it was filmed and visited set locations (multiple times), mum wrote her University thesis on it, dad met Maureen O’Hara (multiple times), we have tons of memorabilia. If one movie represents our family, THIS is it.

What are your favourite Christmas-themed movies? What about movies you watch at Christmas time, or associate with Christmas, that aren’t actually about Christmas? Let me know in the comments!

  1. You have included my fav here, its Mary Poppins. I will watch it every Christmas, but probably only at Christmas. I also love The Wizard of Oz and Bedknobs and Broomsticks.

A VERY interesting list of movies! I wouldn’t associate a lot of these with Christmas, but I love a lot of them. Like Dirty Dancing and Pretty Woman. Home Alone is one of my favorite movies ever. I love watching it, ELF, and Christmas Vacation. Oh, and A Christmas Story. They never get old this time of year!
