Top Ten Seven Fairytale Retellings
I haven’t read many retellings, or at least I don’t think I have, but then I only found out Throne of Glass was a Cinderella retelling after I read it… This list is a mixture of retellings I’ve read, and retellings I’ve yet to read, so feel free to push some more on me, because I’m loving them!
Retellings I’ve Read and ❤
1. The Throne of Glass series by Sarah J Maas: Well, only the series so far, because Maas is trying to kill me from a broken heart by making me wait for my Ship to sail. Apparently, there are a few inspirations behind this story, but Cinderella was one of them. I didn’t know this when I read the books… and I still don’t see it?
2. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas: Maas for the win! Because all my fangirling is for her right now. This is a Fey retelling of Beauty and the Beast, and I loved it! Just like I love the original.
3. Uprooted by Naomi Novik: My wonderful OTSPSecretSister got this book for me, and I’m just over halfway through it. I haven’t read anywhere that it’s a fairytale retelling, but I’m guessing that it’s loosely based on Beauty and the Beast too. Really enjoying it so far, and it appears to be a standalone? So that’s a first in fantasy for me!

4. The Lunar Chronicles series by Marissa Meyer: I own the second book in this series, but I can’t go anywhere with it until I get my hands on the rest of them to binge-read them. I’ve heard great things, so I’m pretty sure I’ll like this one.
5. The Wrath and The Dawn by Renee Ahdieh: To think that I was originally going to pass up on this one because of the cover! I know, some people love it, but it really doesn’t work for me. I’ve heard such amazing things, that even though I’m not familiar with the original story that was the inspiration behind this novel, I can’t wait to read it!
6. The Gracekeepers by Kirsty Logan: How wonderfully delicious is that US cover?? Swoons. This is one I was again happy to pass over (partly based on the UK cover – I know, it’s terrible of me), but I saw Choncey’s interview with the author, and I was gripped.

7. Splintered by A J Howard: Cait LOVES this series (which kinda scares me, hype much?), but for some reason I still haven’t picked any of them up. I’m not a massive fan of Alice In Wonderland (mostly because I’ve just never read the original), so it has stayed on my thinking-about-it shelf for ages.
So, as you can see, the list of fairytale retellings I’ve read is quite sparse! Especially for a Disney fan? I did recently pick up a collection of Fairytales by the Grimm brothers, so perhaps when I’ve read more of them I’ll delve into more retellings. Which ones would you recommend? I recently just heard of Uprooted for the first time, and it seems like a really unique, entertaining story! The fact that it’s a standalone makes it even more enticing- seriously, when does that happen anymore in the fantasy genre? Anyways, great list! 🙂

Hi Holly, I just finished Uprooted last week and NEED to get my review up soon. I thought it was a really unique story, slow to start, and quite intricate, but ultimately very entertaining and a solid read. It’s a standalone too, which IS unusual for fantasy. I’d recommend it! R x

This whole retellings thing is new to me. I have only read one – ACOTAR, which I liked. Beauty and the Beast is probably my favorite fairytale. I have Cinder on my Kindle and WILL read it eventually. Buddy read?!? LOL. And I want to try The Wrath now that it’s getting a lot of buzz…but the hype monster scares me a bit.

I liked ACOMAF more than ACOTAR. Did you have a fave? I thought the relationship in the second one might have won you more. It did me! Lol Buddy read for Wrath?? R xx

The UK cover of Uprooted is SO BEAUTIFUL. Wow. You’ve got some great books on your list!

While I do love the UK cover, I actually don’t mind the US one either! Though the UK one is mint coloured under the dust jacket with purple end pages. Swoon. I just finished reading it last week and need to get my review up. R x

If you want a Disney-esque read, try Beauty by Robin McKinley. It was written 13 years before the film but, man, there are a lot of similarities.

I’ve never heard of the Gracekeepers before, but I just looked it up on Goodreads and it sounds like something I’d enjoy. I’m also reading Uprooted and am enjoying it as well.

Ooh some in common with me 🙂 I’ve read Throne of Glass and A Court of Thorns and Roses by Maas. I also read Cinder by Meyer, and have Uprooted on my wishlist. I didn’t know that Throne was a Cinderella retelling (?) Did I miss something here, lol? Okay now I feel I should go back and reread it before moving onto the second in the series.

I think any of Maas’ retellings are more influenced by, than actual retellings of. I couldn’t place Cinderella in there either lol R xx

What’s The Gracekeepers about? It looks interesting!

It does, doesn’t it?! Some people prefer the UK cover, but I love that US edition. The basic premise is that the world is pretty much covered in water, and one girl is a Gracekeeper, who buries the dead at sea, their graves marked with birdcages. There’s another girl who works on a ship with her bear in a travelling circus. The two girls’ stories merge somewhere along the way. I wasn’t overly interested based on cover alone, until I saw this interview with the author (can’t remember if there are spoilers, but it made me want to read the book more anyways) – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lw6xJc1lYbM

If you liked ‘A Court Of Thorns & Roses’, I have a fey retelling of Beauty & The Beast called ‘Valiant’ on my list 🙂 I really like that cover for ‘Uprooted’ too. Great list!

I feel like I know nothing now. Throne of Glass is a Cinderella retelling, I didn’t know that. I haven’t read it yet though but I’ll keep that in mind when I get to it. Splintered is an Alice retelling, again I didn’t know. The Wrath and Dawn is my next book club read but I know nothing about it, I must see now what it was a retelling of.
But read Cinder, it’s fab! And it’s just a very loose retelling but all the details that are pulled in just make it quirky and fun.

LOL! I don’t think it is a close retelling, it’s meant to be inspired by it just. The Wrath and The Dawn is a retelling of A Thousand and One Nights, which I’ve never heard of before or read, so it won’t influence my opinion of the book if or when I get to it! Cinder is on the wishlist, I’m scared of the hype though!! R x
