The Review

I was in a reading slump – I thought maybe it was because I have a lot going on at the minute, but I finally put the book causing the slump down and picked up some Maas. And it worked. My reading slump was obliterated and I was left as a mess of emotions, wailing all over the floor. Maas is an amazing teller of intricate stories – the characters, the plot, the fantasy elements, they’re all woven together in such a fantastic way that these books are a complete pleasure to read, and impossible for me to put down until I’ve devoured the whole thing.

The character development in this novel is amazing, we learn a lot about our main characters’ backgrounds, their motivations and their desires, but without any annoying info dumping. Maas weaves the plot, including twists that I didn’t see coming, into an excellent story that has loss, heartbreak, kick-ass fight scenes, wit, romance and everything else in between. My ‘ship finally got to sail in this instalment too, which I literally couldn’t have been happier about, but of course Maas couldn’t let me be deliriously happy for too long before ripping my heart out and stomping all over it.

Crown of Midnight develops the paranormal elements to the story, which I really enjoy, and is a stellar sequel to Throne of Glass. Maas has planted the seeds for many plot-arcs in the future, and I’m ridiculously excited to see where this series is going and to spend more time in this world.

Interesting information for fans who want to know if they’re pronouncing names correctly, Maas has released this guide. I was only messing up two of them!
