Sci-Fi Month: November 2014

I’m beginning to really enjoy taking part in these events, I think it gives our thoughts and ideas more structure and allows us to have really great discussions on a selected topic. With that in mind, I’m excited to announce that I’m participating in Sci-Fi November hosted by Rinn Reads and the girls at Oh, The Books!

So, what can you look forward to on Confessions of a Book Geek?

Well, I’m new to the Sci-Fi genre – so I’ll be answering a panel question on newbies to the genre, interviewing award-winning Sci-Fi author, Ian Sales, and discussing my previous fears of all things Sci-Fi! I’ll use this post to collect all Sci-Fi Month related articles below:

    Sci Fi isn’t my thing and I don’t ever read it. But I did give The Host a try, and I LOVED it. So, that’s my recommendation to you. 🙂

      Thanks, Brandie! I think some sci-fi may be too “out there” for me, but Time Traveler’s Wife is considered to be sci-fi (have you read it?), so those types of books I can work with! R x

    I’m curious to hear your fears of sci-fi 🙂

    I just found your blog so I don’t know your tastes at all. But glancing through your reviews I’d recommend These Broken Stars by Meagan Spooner and Amie Kaufman and Pawn by Aimee Carter. They’re both sci-fi light with a good YA vibe and a touch of romance.

      Oh I have so many! I’ll be doing a discussion post soon about my fears! Thanks for the recs, I’ve dipped my toe into a couple of more hardcore sci-fi novellas that are a little more out of my comfort zone, because of the event it means I can push myself a little more, but I think for the most part I’ll be gentler on myself with this new-to-me genre!! R x

    I am a 2nd Year Participant who is finally making her rounds to all the lovely Intro SFN Posts! I posted mine a bit late (which I explain): SFN: 2014 I fell in love with sci-fi as a young girl, which I spoke about last year (all my posts are archived for SFN: click the top menu “Book Blogosphere Events” to find the SFN section!), but if I were to recommend books to start with I nearly might have trouble knowing which ones to suggest!

    I am highlighting three series this month: the Piercing the Veil series which is a Sci-Fantasy; the History Mystery series involving time travel, and a science fiction based on science fact thriller series — my best advice is to seek out stories within Speculative Fiction that interests you the most. You can visit my past showcases as much as see which stories cross into the main umbrella of Speculative Fiction in my Story Vault. You might find a new Indie author you’d love to curl into their stories!

Your reviews are already posted! I shall drop back and read them properly as Dystopian is a tricky genre for me – yet with Asti’s encouragement I am reading “All Our Yesterdays” for SFN! 🙂

      Hi! Thanks for commenting, I’m going to go trawl through all of your posts from last year for inspiration. As I’m so new to Sci-Fi I thought I would start with genres that aren’t as intimidating for me, so I did a few dystopians, and now I’m doing a bit of a contemporary/romance read (The Time Traveler’s Wife). There are so many I’d love to have bought and read for this month, but my physical to be read pile is already over-flowing! I did read Adrift on a Sea of Rains by Ian Sales, as I’ll be interviewing him on the blog, and it was a hard-core sci-fi novella. It was interesting, and different, but I found it quite challenging, so I think for enjoyment purposes I’ll be sticking to Sci-Fi-lite reads!

      I haven’t had the chance to catch up with everyone’s posts yet, will probably dedicate some time to it this weekend. Thanks again for stopping by!
