Top Ten Authors I’ve Only Read One Book By, And Need More!

My Goodreads account was used to help me compile today’s list, these are authors I’ve only read one book by, ordered by most recent-first. I’m going to hold-off on including a poll at the end of this TTT, but feel free to recommend great reads by any of these authors! For those who are interested in how I’m doing with the polls, I have read and reviewed The Perks of Being A Wallflower (winner of the TTT Books That Give Me Bookish-Indecisive Syndrome), I’m currently in the middle of Throne of Glass (winner of the TTT Books People Tell Me I HAVE To Read), which leaves Cinder to read (winner of the TTT Books I Can’t Wait To Read (But Don’t Own Yet)). Bonus points for also reading If I Stay, which was a runner-up in one of the polls – review to follow!

Authors I've Only Read One Book By

1. Tess Sharpe, author of Far From You – I recently read and reviewed Far From You, and thoroughly enjoyed this debut. Based on Sharpe’s debut novel, which handled some very tough issues expertly, I’m really looking forward to reading more by her.

2. Mila Gray (Sarah Alderson), author of Come Back to Me – I buddy-read this with Brandie @ Brandie is a Book Junkie, you can check out our review here. I don’t think I’ve ever read anything by Sarah Alderson, and I know she’s working on her next New Adult piece under pen-name Mila Gray, which I’m already looking forward to. Writers are upping the game when it comes to the NA age range, and I’m loving it.

3. E. Lockhart, author of We Were Liars – A book that has taken internet-book-lovers by storm, I finally gave in and read this one quite recently (my review). I had never been drawn to an E. Lockhart book previously, OK let’s be honest, I’d never heard of her before We Were Liars, but having read it I’d be interested to check out more of her stuff.

4. Juliana Stone, author of Boys Like You – I requested this book to review via NetGalley. I’d never heard of Stone before, so I was surprised to discover just how many books she has written, as I’d assumed Boys Like You was a debut. It was the cover that initially grabbed me, and having snooped around Stone’s Author Page on Goodreads, it’s safe to say this is the best cover she has, which stands out on her profile.

5. S J Watson, author of Before I Go To Sleep – I read this book a few years ago and was absolutely hooked to it. I didn’t realise it was being made into a movie until quite recently, and I can’t wait to see it. I always thought S J Watson was a female author though, so I got quite the shock today on Goodreads!

6. David Nicholls, author of One Day – I watched the movie before I read the book – something I rarely do! And the book by far outshines the movie adaptation. I was so disappointed in Anne Hathaway’s performance (and I love her), and credit to the book – the shock factor still got me quite hard even though I knew what was going to happen. Surprisingly, I don’t think I’ve read anything else by Nicholls, but I intend to.

7. Audrey Niffenegger, author of The Time Traveller’s Wife – I adored this book, and I really enjoyed the movie adaptation (I know some people didn’t like it, but I cry every time I watch it, and I don’t cry easily!). I’ve recently heard there’s a sequel in the pipeline, and I’m not sure how I feel about it. I’d like to read something else by Niffenegger though, if anyone has any suggestions?

8. Lionel Shriver, author of We Need To Talk About Kevin – It’s probably weird to LOVE such a dark book with such a twisted main character, but I talk about this book all the time. Any time anyone needs a book recommendation, guaranteed this is the first title out of my mouth. I first read it when I was 17, and I’ve loved it ever since.

9. Sarra Manning, author of Pretty Things – I first read this when I was in my teens, and it managed to survive many of the culls I made of my collection when I grew into adulthood. I really enjoyed this story, and it was one of the first YA books I encountered that dealt with sex, sexuality and the confusion of being a teenager so well.

10. Sarah Dessen, author of Someone Like You – People seem to either love or dislike Sarah Dessen. I read Someone Like You when I was a teen and really enjoyed it, I think I cried. I have Just Listen in my physical TBR pile, so should I get to that one sooner rather than later?

    Oh, I haven’t read ANY of these books… The Time Traveler’s Wife is pretty high up on my TBR though. I can’t say I’ve heard about other books by Niffenegger though, so I’ll look them up later!

      I’ve a feeling today is going to be one of those TTT days when TBRs grow a lot! Lol at least we know the books come highly recommended! I really loved The Time Traveler’s Wife, for me it’s an easy-to-understand sci-fi story! R x

    Great list, Rachel! 🙂 I’ve only read We Were Liars and I appreciated the book and the writing. I can still see myself picking up her other books in the future. I’ve read your reviews of Far From You and Come Back to Me and they made me want to really check out these books. I’m just not sure how soon I can do that. LOL 🙂 I’ve seen the movie version of One Day and that twist in the ending just about killed me, if you know what I mean. Having never read the book, I didn’t know what was going to happen and my heart just fell off my chest when that scene happened. T__T I’ve been meaning to try Sarra Manning, starting from It Felt Like A Kiss, but haven’t gotten around to it yet. And I checked out We Need to Talk About Kevin on Goodreads and gosh, what a book! I don’t know if I’ll ever pick it up to read but what a compelling premise. Again, great list Rachel! I hope we get to sample seconds from the authors from our lists!       Thanks, Camille! I’ve heard good things about Lockhart’s other books, some people even like them more that We Were Liars. Oh, I know the feeling. Every time I’m on another blog I see great books to add to my list, we’ll be forever chasing our tails, us readers! I’m really glad my reviews made you want to check them out though 🙂 I know!!! I cried buckets over that twist ending in One Day, especially the way it was done in the movie, I squealed in the cinema. But the book is worth reading if you liked the movie, the concept works better as a book I think, and like I said that ending still got me. We Need To Talk About Kevin is just… urgh, it’s so good. It’s so well written, and you question your beliefs all the time, because it does open up the nature vs nurture argument, are some people born evil or are they made that way? And as it’s written from the mother’s POV, that adds a whole new element to it as well. And the ending. GAH, THE ENDING! It’s worth it. Thanks for commenting 🙂

      I love the title of that book. I’ve added it to my wishlist on Goodreads and will get to it at some point. Niffenegger and Shriver are two of those authors where the books I’ve read by them were so good, and stayed with me so much, that I’m petrified to pick up something else by them!

    I think you should get to Just Listen sooner, for sure. I really love that one. Also, if you like that one, I would recommend The Truth about Forever. That’s my favorite Sarah Dessen book.
    I love We Need to Talk about Kevin, too! It is probably weird to be so obsessed with such a creepy, dark book, but I can’t help it.

      Ahhh, so many books Stef! How will I ever get through them all?! F 451 is still on my to-do list… I’ve been sucked into Throne of Glass, so when that’s out of the way and I’m back on a contemporary kick I’ll be sure to pick up Dessen. I’m so pleased to have found another Kevin fan! Well, not him exactly, but the book. It was just so gripping and so well done! R x

        Haha. I feel you. I have no idea how I’m going to get around to all the books I need and want to read.
        Yeah, I wouldn’t say I’m a Kevin fan (though I think he’s a fascinating character). Completely gripping and mesmerizing. So good.

      My memory of the character descriptions is a bit hazy, so I’ll probably not be overly accurate on that. But, I think Firth could play that role really well, Kidman wouldn’t have been my first choice – she’s a good actress so can probably pull it off, but based on looks and personality she wasn’t what I’d imagined. From watching the trailer it looks good though!

    Ooh, I haven’t read any of these authors! (oops?) I do own We Were Liars and The Time Traveller’s Wife, I just need to get around to reading them 🙂 I feel like I have a bazillion Sarah Dessen books on my TBR, I really need to try one soon, but I don’t really know where to start!

      Haha there’s no oops, Tuesday has become the day of the ever-growing TBR! I always find new authors I haven’t read yet! Oh, well if you own them you’re halfway there! We Were Liars was a pretty quick read, TTTW will take longer, but it’s such a good story – maybe read it for sci-fi November if you’re taking part? It’s hosted by Oh, The Books! and Rinn Reads. I haven’t read enough Dessen to give you a good starting point, but if you have Someone Like You, I realllllly liked that one!! Lol R x

    I’m excited for Mila Gray/Sarah Alderson’s next NA too! I really really liked Come Back To Me. Her YA series, Lila, is really fun too.
    The Time Traveler’s Wife is one of my favorite books too! Haven’t read anything else by that author, but I used to be really obsessed with that book haha.

      Come Back To Me was such a good NA! I’m so glad that some really good authors are taking on that genre and developing it so it’s more than just erotica for 20 year olds! I used to reread Time Traveller’s Wife all the time, and I loved the movie (I have a girl crush on McAdams!).

    I haven’t read most of these author’s books. I do really want to read Far From You, though. That one looks really interesting. I read one of Sarah Dessen’s books – Dreamland – for a YA lit class I took in college. It was excellent, but not a book I would normally read.

      Far From You was so good, a fab debut! I definitely have one or maybe two S Dessen in my physical TBR pile, and I’m sure the library has some. I should really check out more. I’m just out of a contemporary kick and I started Throne of Glass, and now I’m stuck, I NEED the next two in my life, so all other reading is on hold! R x

    I absolutely love Sarah Dessen – her books defined my high school experience. But I still think my favourite book of her’s is The Truth About Forever. It’s just so touching!

    I fancy reading some E. Lockhart since reading We Were Liars, although I’m not sure if those are my sort of books. I also want to read more Audrey Niffenegger because it was a very good book. I haven’t seen the film though – I’m slightly scared of how much I’ll probably cry in it. I read a couple of Sarah Dessen books a few years ago and I remember enjoying them and that’s about it. She’s definitely an author that I need to read more of.

      I’m not sure about her other stuff either, but I’ve heard great things. I didn’t cry too much throughout the movie, but the ending is a killer. It’s well done, I thought.

    I thought SJ Watson was a lady too until I saw him on BBC London yesterday! I love Sarah Dessen’s books and my favourite Sarra Manning books are the Diary of a Crush series. Oh and The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks by E.Lockhart is an all time favourite.

      I have no idea why, but I could have sworn Watson was female. I think I read the acknowledgements in the book too and it sounded female! Was a pleasant surprise though, as I read A LOT of female authors. Thanks for the recs, Sophia, going to go check them out 🙂 R x

      See, initially I wasn’t a fan of the casting (except McAdams, I love her) but he really grew on me and now I can’t imagine anyone else doing it. I heard JLaw got the lead in Burial Rites but I also was told the lead is older, and thought McAdams would have been good in it. R x

      Oh no. I got the eBook for 99p on Amazon a couple of weeks ago… It’s good that the community has kept the plot so hush-hush though, it wasn’t spoiled for me at all, and it’s a pretty quick read! R x

      I’m wondering if Boys Like You was Stone’s first YA. The covers of the other novels she’s written all look like adult romance, and to be honest if they had a revamp I’d be more inclined to get them. I know that sounds silly, but covers are important! Thanks for commenting 🙂

    Great list! Tess Sharpe is on my TBR, as is E. Lockhart, both of their books sound really interesting. I haven’t read many of Sarah Dessen’s books, I love Someone Like You and I also enjoyed The Moon and More, so I’d love to check out more of her novels – she has so many to choose from!
