I found (and answered) these questions over on 101 Books – feel free to leave your answers to all, or some, of the questions in the comments (or re-post if the notion takes you 🙂 ).
1. What’s the first book you remember reading?
Alpaca by Rosemary Billam – I can’t actually find this anywhere anymore and Internet searches don’t bring up much, but I absolutely adored this book as a very young child, maybe around 4 years of age??
2. Name a movie that you think was actually better than the book.
I can think of some that came pretty close and really got the essence of the books, but they weren’t better. I’ve never read The Green Mile but I imagine it would be hard to beat that movie.
3. You have to pick one format to read in the rest of your life (you can’t have both)—digital or paper?
Paper. Hands down. Every time.
4. Beach reading or mountain cabin reading?
It had been a long time since I’ve read on a beach, and I’ve never read in a mountain cabin. If I had the choice right now though I’d say beach.
5. Favorite punctuation mark?
The ampersand (&).
6. Most annoying grammatical error?
There’s so many. I’m a full-on grammar fiend. That’s not to say I always get it right, especially with the “older” uses like “who” and “whom”. But my biggest pet peeve is “your” and “you’re”. It’s the difference between knowing your shit and knowing you’re shit.
7. Book you’re most embarrassed to have never read?
Don’t know if I would go so far as to say embarrassed, but I am pretty sheepish about the sheer number of classics I haven’t read, which is why I set up my Classics Club challenge.
8. Book you’re most embarrassed to have read?
Again, not so embarrassed. I’d say the ones people think I should be embarrassed about are probably the Twilight series and 50 Shades of Grey. If Ana said, “oh my” one more time… I get the book snobbery when it comes to these titles (more so for 50 than Twilight), but they are guilty pleasures and I found them to be highly entertaining. I stand by my bad choices, damn it!
9. Are you a morning person or a night owl?
Night owl. I could happily stay up for hours and get most of my “great ideas” in the evenings, and I could happily lie in bed forever in the mornings. I’m a very talkative person and I can barely speak until I’ve had a strong coffee.
10. If you have kids, how much control do you want to have (or did you have) over what they read?
I don’t have any yet, but I imagine I’ll want to control the adult content and themes for a good few years. I’d also want to encourage reading outside of the comfort zone and challenging beliefs and opinions through reading as they get older… and obviously they’ll HAVE to read Harry Potter. When I was growing up my the magazines I was allowed to read were censored much more than the books – magazines aimed at 10-14 year old girls (Shout and Mizz) had agony aunt questions that were deemed highly inappropriate. Looking back, I can see that they were pretty risque, but all the girls I know who read them turned out OK! In terms of books, I don’t think I’ve ever been told I couldn’t read something, only that I would appreciate it more if I was older, and for that I’m pretty grateful.

I have vetoed some of my kids’ picture book choices, simply because there are some books that I don’t want to read 50 times. 😉 Now that they’re reading on their own, I steer them away from books they aren’t mature enough for yet. There are so many great books that we’re never at a loss for reading material.

Sounds like fun…I might just do this. I agree, if I have children Harry Potter will be a requirement. I’m already waiting for my nephew to be old enough.

Same! But I don’t think my nephew is going to be a “reader”. If parents are really into reading do you think it rubs off on kids?? My parents advocate reading and learning but neither of them love books like I do….so I wonder if it can work in reverse… R x

It’s one of those nature vs nurture questions, isn’t it? I didn’t grow up with bookworms for parents but I’ve been told I used to tell elaborate stories when I was a child. My nephew loves reading, a grand habit nurtured by his mom and me, but his little brother doesn’t seem too interested just yet. I think it’s just a matter of finding the right book at the right time to open their eyes and see the endless adventures reading can take them on.

I would say Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine. My school’s library got a copy right around when I really started checking out books in 6th grade!

Breaking Dawn (either part). I hated that book most out of the whole series, but the movie was just kinda whatever for me.

Mountain cabin reading, nothing like a cozy blanket and fire. When I read outside I always get overheated and have to move inside to cool down. Plus you’d get sand all in the pages…

7. Book you’re most embarrassed to have never read?
I’m embarrassed to have never read any of the numerous books that have been sitting on my bookshelf for at least a year or more. Especially if I’ve gone out and gotten the next book in the series – still without reading the first one!

Revenge by Sharon Osbourne. The celebrity attached to it and the plot line are just…bad.
9. Are you a morning person or a night owl?
Definitely a night owl. I could stay up all night doing stuff and never burn out, but even with 8 hours of sleep, I drag in the morning.
10. If you have kids, how much control do you want to have (or did you have) over what they read?
I want them to feel comfortable with whatever they want. My parents didn’t really limit my reading at all (other than number of books I was allowed to take home) and I like to think I developed my own preferences. Content-wise, I guess I would just try to get them to explore their own age group until a certain age when any topic would be okay (like maybe 15).

1. That might be The Cat in the Hat. I used to read that so much that I had it memorised and would tell my mum the whole thing walking home from school. She must have hated me, haha.
2. Haven’t read The Green Mile either but I don’t think it could beat that film. I cry at the beginning of that film now because I know what’s coming. I also think Fight Club was a better film than book.

4. Beach is hot, sand is sticky and sun hurts my eyes. Cabin in the woods makes me feel like I’ll be murdered there. So, to be safe, I’ll pick the beach.

6. Your and you’re get to me too. I didn’t even manage to real in my grammar Nazi ways when my cousin showed me the heart slab they got for the front of my Aunts grave. It said YOUR when it should have said YOU’RE. This lil voice in my head was saying ‘Don’t say anything! Don’t say anything! Don’t say anything’ and then the bigger, grammar Nazi voice in my head said: SAY IT! That’ll be on there FOREVER. Say it!!!

9. Night owl. It’s currently 00:47am. I’ll probably be up till bout 3am.
10. Don’t have any. If I did then I would probably have quite a lot whilst they are young, as far as making sure they aren’t reading mature content. Once they get a bit older than I will leave them to it.

I don’t think I’ve read ANY Dr Seuss that I know of or can remember, am I missing out, even as an adult??
I haven’t read Fight Club either, but some of those movies, in order to accurately describe what is happening, they must either be really long books or they aren’t as effective as the movie… I might have to challenge myself to find out… I’m the same with The Green Mile, you know those “100 Greatest Movies of All Time” shows, I was watching a clip of TGM on it and started bawling, can’t NOT cry at that movie.

I’m a definite night owl but I have to attempt to reign it in midweek or I’d be a zombie the next day, especially for work. If you don’t sleep til 3am how do you do it? Is there a secret I’m missing?! Cuz I’d be all about more productive am hours if I could get them!!
