Top Ten Covers I’d Frame As A Piece Of Art

I’ve been looking forward to this week’s Top Ten Tuesday because I am one of those awful people who most definitely judge a book by its cover. I think we all do on some level, don’t we? The cover is our first insight into the book and is usually the number one thing that will make me want to pick it up and find out more about it. Never underestimate the power of an intriguing/beautiful/quirky cover! Disclaimer: I haven’t read all of the books included below, but I plan to, some day.

1. Shatter Me: You could take your pick of any of the (new) covers from this series and I would gladly have it displayed somewhere in my home. Probably the best (and smartest) cover up-date I’ve ever seen. I’m currently impatiently waiting for this to arrive from Amazon!

2. Halo: I haven’t read this one yet (or any of the Chemical Garden Trilogy) but the covers are delicious and have definitely pulled me in already; the sun, the silhouettes, the wings (?!), it would look damn good in a frame on a wall…

3. The Retribution of Mara Dyer: This screams dark and mysterious, it is beautiful and it’s under-water people!! I love the covers from this whole series.

4. Fallen: Again, any of the books in this series would do in a nice chunky frame, thank you very much.

5. City of Lost Souls: Unlike the rest of my series picks, this one would have to specifically be the City of Lost Souls from The Immortal Instruments series, because it’s my favourite, obviously. It’s the only one that features a couple with some form of interaction, which I think is a strong indication of what the book is about. I’m just not as fussed on the ones with a headless torso.

6. The Ocean At The End Of The Lane: I’ve been holding off buying this book because I want this cover and not the other version floating around out there. I’ve definitely become one of those people who will wait to purchase the cover version I want need.

7. Hush Hush: Unfortunately, I’ve heard a lot of bad reviews of this book/series, but those covers are amazing!! If I can find a decent deal on them I might give them a go, even if it is just to own that cover… *cough*

8. Imaginary Girls: The form, the water, the colours… I could get lost staring at this…

9. Clipped Wings: I think this would look pretty amazing as a piece of metal wall-art as opposed to a print you would frame and hang.

10. Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix: Would a list of mine ever be complete without an appearance from HP? I don’t think so! I’d like to stay loyal to the original series I grew up with and have a framed (and signed??) print of the Bloomsbury cover for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, but that would be because I’m a huge fan, and not because that cover is “art” I’d like to hang on my wall, so for the purposes of this list I’ve included a cover with imagery that I like for its more “artsy” values.

So, a few observations – what have I learned about me?

This list is specifically book covers I think would look good as a piece of art, which is different from a list of things I look for in a book cover to pull me in. I also like illustrated, “wordy” covers, quirky covers and all sorts in between, but I wouldn’t hang them on my walls.

Also, there are a few obvious trends going on here, which I wouldn’t have identified before making this list. It would appear I’m obsessed with; people on covers; covers that look like amazing photography; water; people floating in water (or throwing great shapes like they’re in water); paranormal elements; having dark colours overall, but sometimes with a striking bright colour to break it up; oh and couples. Anyone want to have a go psycho-analyzing that?!

    This is a great list! I haven’t read either of the Maya Dyer books, but those covers are so gorgeous. Also, I totally understand holding off until you get that cover of The Ocean at the End of the Lane. I have the other one though, and I love it.

      They’re on my TBR list. I’m adding to it quicker than I can read… I’ve been tempted to just pick up The Ocean at the End of the Lane so many times, but I’ll hold off for a while, my to read pile will keep me entertained til then! Thanks for your comment 🙂 R x

      Thanks! When I saw the original covers it didn’t really interest me, then the new covers came out (and I heard more about it) I got interested pretty quick – amazing what a cover can do!

      I’ve heard so many not-so-good things about that series, but Goodreads has a pretty high rating for it, I was debating it for a while… might check out the library for it instead – such a shame cuz that cover is amazing! Thanks for that, might have to check out her stuff. R x

      I haven’t read the Fallen series either, but I plan to, especially after seeing the main characters have been cast for the movie adaptation. The series that Halo is from has great reviews on Goodreads. I guess some great books have dodgy covers, and some not-so-great books have amazing covers, they should work on getting that the right way round! Thanks for your comment! R x
